The main symbol of The Color Purple is actually the color purple. The color purple stands for human hope, which is its significance. It is an amazing color, when found in nature and someone, it indicates that the feeling of hope, despite misery. The story revolves around this color.

The significance of the pants is when Shug suggests that Celie makes herself pants, but Celie thinks pants are for men. She then says that Mr. ______ will never let her wear them. Shug points out that since Celie is already performing man's work by laboring in the fields, she should also be able to wear men's clothes. At first Celie is uncertain. She thinks that Mr. ______ will never permit her to dress in pants, but then she understands Shug's argument.

In the first stage of her life, Celie experiences the terrible and cruel life her stepfather ended up giving her. In the second stage, Celie experiences continued abuse from Mr. ______. In the third stage, she awakens to the possibility of self-realization through her relationship with Shug and her contact with Nettie. Finally, Celie knows who she is and has established a life where she has control. She finds the happiness and contentment from her new self-realizations. Nettie's life parallels with this when she spends time in Africa. The letters from Nettie serve as a contrast to Celie's life. They also enlarge Celie's perspective of her life. Even though these two are far apart they both go through huge changes. Nettie gets to grow with Celie’s children and become more educated. They both struggle, but grow into strong women.

As for Mr. ______ he also changes in the end Instead of being the abusive brute he was he becomes more of a gentleman. When he and Celie cross paths again they both noticed the change in each other, but when Mr. ______ asks her to marry him again she denies him. She is unable to forgive him for what he put her through. They do remain friends in
