Title: Giver, The

Author: Lois Lowry

Setting: In the future in a perfect society with no color. The place is weird compared to our society, it eliminated all pain, fear, war, and hatred.

Theme: The significance of memory to human life.

Connection to Self: Memories are just normal things in our life. But now I realize that without those memories what the world would be like.

Connection to another book read: Number the Stars by Lois Lowry. It shows a person going through extreme hardship.

Conflict: Jonas receives memories from the Giver and finds out how empty his society is. He needs to bring the memories to his community to bring them true happiness and joy.

Man vs. Society

Protagonist: Jonas

Antagonist: The "perfect" society

Summary: The Giver is based in a society where all pain, fear, war, and hatred are eliminated. This is a perfect society. There is no prejudice because everyone looks and acts basically the same. This society has gotten rid of choice, and example would be at age twelve, everyone will be chosen a job based on their interest and abilities. All the citizens cannot choose their spouses. They must apply for their spouses and wait for one as the committee will choose the perfect one.

The giver is written from the point of view of Jonas, an eleven-year-old boy. He lives with his parents in his dwelling. His dad is a nurturer of newborn children and his mom works at the Department of Justice. He has a sister named Lily, who is 4 years younger than him. Early in the story he sees objects "changing" for a flash. He is waiting for the ceremony of twelve to come and he receives
