Mission Statements

Mission statements tell you what the company is all about. "A mission statement is a declaration of the company's purpose. But it is also a promise the company makes to its customers and its employees," says Jeffrey Abrahams, an Oakland, California-based consultant and author of The Mission Statement. "That promise becomes an integral part of the branding of the company. Even if we're talking about a one-person business, the mission statement brands the business and hopefully differentiates it from the competition so that customers understand that the company is committed to a purpose and will back that up with products and service."(1) Mission statements, I believe, are a good motivator because they allow the employees to look forward to achieving a common goal. In the company that employs me, they do not have a mission statement listed. I have no idea if they have a mission statement, which means to me that they do not have any direction they are headed. Without a mission statement, a company does not really have an end goal. Mission statements can also be used to determine how well a company is performing on an overall basis.

Mission statements give a company a purpose for being in business. Without one you are like a fish out of water, headed for disaster. I would say a lot of companies without a mission statement seem to encounter a lot more problems and headaches than those that have a purpose for existing. When a company has a purpose for existing they tend to flourish much faster. They bring the whole team onto the same page, so that all can accomplish the same goal in a more timely manner.

Organization Values

Organizational values are basically what the mission statement is supposed to describe for a company.
