Motivation is a process where our need activates a selected behavior thanks to we can try to achieve our goal. The motivation drives us to act in a way to achieve our desire goal. All the push or pull motives are connected with our perceptions, with way how we see and understand the world around us.

In 1943 Abraham Maslow published a “Theory of human motivation” where he presented hierarchy of needs. On the bottom of the pyramid are all physiological and safety needs such us food, water, air, rest etc. Higher levels represents higher needs, which are more complex. An affiliation on the third level of the pyramid says about belonging to a groups such as family, school or work colleagues groups; a need of love and friendship. On the forth level are self-esteem needs such as respect, achievement, confidence, need of being recognize. Self-actualization needs are on the last level of the Maslow’s pyramid are creativity, morality, spontaneity, problem solving etc.

All the lower level needs have to be satisfied, although we would not survive. After that all the higher needs can be motivated (Organizational Behaviour)

Many other motivational theories are based on Maslow’s pyramid of need.

Dann in 1981 in 7 points explained motivation stimuli. He says that “travel is a response to what is lacking yet desire”. In another words it is a respond for a lack of for example – beautiful weather or job opportunities. More then 600,000 people have come to work in the UK in 2006. More then half of this group came from Poland where big rate of unemployment and low salaries are the push factors which motivate people to travel (BBC News).

He says about relation between motivational push and destination pull factors, that they response to each other. He explained that tourist’s travel might be a result of lack of given cultural behaviour in their home environment. He meant

Another Dann’s point says that “motivation is a classified purpose”. That means that we travel to pursue a goal. That may be visiting friend or family, leisure or study. For instance – UK is second just after US in number of international students (BBC News). The push factor is a lack of opportunities to educate, expenses or weak level of universities in other countries. People want to extend their mind as well which is need of self – actualization in Maslow’s theory.

Dann’s theory says also about motivation typologies. First of motive is looking for a “better set of amenities then are available at home” (Tourism – Principle and Practise). In this case push factors may be looking for better job opportunities, exploring new culture or just simply to change the weather or take some rest. Another typologies focus on measurable features of tourists role.

In 1995 McIntosh, Geoldner and Ritchie introduced four categories of motivation.

First group is related to physical motivators. Lots of people are suffer from stress, they need to stress – free environment, that may be a reason to travel (The Stress Management Society). Health may be another reason to travel. People want to travel to regenerate their body and mind.

To the next group we can include all cultural motivators. People desire to explore other cultures in which they can develop and educate them self and get new experiences. In this case need of personal growth is a push factor.

Interpersonal motivators in which we can meet other people, visit relatives or friends, experience something new and. Routine is another push factor, people get bored of everyday environment, they want to take a brake, change their life - style, they need a holiday.

Another group includes status and prestige motivators such as personal growth, education, desire of being famous etc.

The Principal Component Analysis (PCA) specified 3 main push factors for travel and in my opinion there a good conclusion of all the theories.

The knowledge factor is a need to improving oneself and exploring and get to know new cultures and places. The leisure factors are those motives responsible for psychical and body self – being. The socialization motives are those for traveling to new places, need of getting new friends and experiences etc. (Journal of Business Research)
