Riordan Manufacturing: Policies and Procedures

A big part of the management profession is creating and enforcing policies and procedures. At the present time, Riordan Manufacturing has nine policies and procedures and of the nine only six will be modified. They are compensation philosophy, employee and labor relations, training and development, employee recognition programs, key jobs, and last recruitment and selection practices. In this paper, the group will explain the purpose of each policies and procedures of Riordan Manufacturing, what changes have been made (changes stated after the old policies and procedures), and the reason for the change.

The purpose compensation philosophy at Riordan Manufacturing is to help the company achieve its mission and goals by attracting, motivating and retaining the most highly-qualified people, with a particular focus on attracting people in critical disciplines such as R & D and quality. Base pay opportunities will be competitive by targeting the median of the appropriate external comparative group for average or satisfactory performance. Because we are focused on creating a team who perform in an above average manner will have the opportunity to earn variable pay to improve their competitive pay position. The company is closely held, therefore, stock options will be available only to officers of the corporation - new policies and procedures- after 90 days of employment all company employees will have stock options available to them. (ebook, p. 2) The reason for the changes is that employees work for this company just as hard as the officers.

 Health insurance for employees and their dependents - new policies and procedures - employees insurance is free and the dependents insurance will be paycheck deducted

Like stated in the beginning of this section, the reason for this change is to attract people to the company, and also to keep the employees that are currently employed with Riordan.

 Dental insurance for employees and their dependents - same as the health insurance

 Life insurance for employees- same as the health insurance.

 401 (k) savings program, with a company match - new policies and procedures - company will pay 10% because employee health, dental, and life insurances are free.

 Paid holiday - if employee is scheduled to work the day before the holiday and misses work, that employee will not be paid.

The reason for the change is that everyone would like to be off the day before and after a holiday and if too many employees decide to miss work, we will not have a full staff to be productive

 Educational assistance/tuition reimbursement - new policies and procedures- employees must get degrees that can be beneficial to Riordan.

The reason for the change is, for example, an employee wants to get a degree to become a kindergarten teacher; our company does not have the use for a kindergarten teacher

Employee and labor relations are the next policies and procedures that changes have been made to. The purpose of the employee and labor relations is because we here at Riordan want everyone to know that their feelings, ideas, and opinions are important. Everyone have different things they can share to help improve our company. Also, if a person has a problem with a supervisor we want them to know we care about them just as much as we care about the supervisor.

 The "open-door" policy states that- The process is loosely defined, and employees do not have a formal process for appealing supervisory decisions (e book, p.3). - new policies and procedures- If an employee has a complaint, the employee must complete a complaint form to appeal the supervisors decisions. Place the form in the complaint box in the human resources department (the box is checked at 4:00 PM daily), before placing the form in the box please enclose the form in an envelope with the name of another supervisor in the same department of the supervisor in which you have the complaint against. All the supervisors of that department (excluding the one the appeal is filed on) will meet with you to discuss the matter, please allow three days to hear back so the supervisor whom you have filed the appeal with will be able to receive it and discuss with the other supervisors on a good time in which they all will be able to meet with you.

The reason for the change is with out any formal process, this can cause supervisor to lose respect and control of their department.

 Employees are encouraged to read and understand the handbook (e book, p.3). - new policies and procedures - sign the last page of the handbook only if you understand and return it to your supervisor, if you do not understand something in the handbook please as your supervisor

The reason for the change is if an employee is reprimand for any reason in the handbook they can not say they did not know are did not understand, because they have signed the page stating they have read and understood the handbook.

Training and development is the third policies and procedures that will be discussed. The purpose of training and development at Riordan is to make sure new employees are trained properly and safely within each department. We also have adopted ways to do things more productively than other companies in this line of work. We also must keep everyone in the company up to date on new and improved methods of different products that are invented.

 New
