I was always undecided regarding the career that I wanted to pursue. As I got older and looked at many choices in careers I realized that I wanted to have a career in the medical field. Being a nurse interests me because it requires the study of the human body along with other great opportunities that nurses have in this career. I want to become a nurse because I like being able to help those who are in need.

Once I stared researching a career in nursing I realized that there were a lot more types of nurses then I had originally thought. This confused me because there was a nurse for almost everything! Then I finally decided on one and that was being a Registered Nurse (RN). A Registered Nurse is not a doctor assistant; a RN gets to treat wounds, give IV’s (intravenous) and basically get to treat their own patients.

I am inspired by my cousin who wanted to have a career in nursing but didn’t have the opportunity, so it’s almost as if I am trying to accomplish this for her. I am trying my best to pursue and accomplish this goal of mine in hopes that I do have the opportunity that my cousin didn’t: to be a Registered Nurse. Right now my main priority is to keep my dream alive and make my parents proud.

Most Registered Nurses work directly with the patients and their families. They are the families’ contact with the medical world, in the hospital and at the patients’ home. A nurse does frequent evaluations of the patient and check vital signs to make sure everything is going as planned. Nurses perform procedures such as IV placement, phlebotomy (process of taking blood samples from the patient) and administering medications. Working hours for a nurse are different almost all the time because no one can predict when an emergency is going to happen. They must be available twelve hours a day, nights, weekend, and be able to handle any rotations or changes in their shifts. Documenting a patient’s medical record, symptoms and diagnostic tests is a primary duty of a nurse. RN’s are responsible for developing day-to-day health care plans for patients in the hospital and for the patients that are ready to discharge and leave home.

To have a successful career in nursing one must have certain skills and abilities. A nurse must always be looking for ways to help her patients. Critical thinking is important because sometimes a nurse must make quick decisions that may benefit or harm the patient. Medical tools are always used while on the job and a nurse must know what these tools are and how to operate each one. A nurse must also know what tool is best needed for a certain patient when trying to make them better.

Working well with people is an important factor in the nursing career; a nurse must always be respectful to every patient regardless of the situation. Persuasion sometimes has to be used because a patient may not want a certain medication so a nurse must help the person understand that it is what is best for him or her health and their track to recovery. A nurse must always pay close attention to their patients because if problems or concerns come up, a nurse must be the first to notice it.

One must complete certain levels of education in order to become a good RN and have a successful career. You must have at least a high school diploma or a GED and must have had completed and graduated from a nursing program (www.iseek.org). Then complete supervised clinical work experience along with passing a national and state exam in order to receive a nursing license. Getting a bachelors degree in nursing would be the best in order to have more nursing jobs and opportunities. Am associates degree in nursing can also offer some job opportunities and can be obtained on community college witch usually
