How Eco Activists took action towards the fast food industries.

According to wikipedia, PETA, People for the ethical treatment of animals is animal rights based organization in which focuses on factory farming, fur farming, animal testing, and animals in entertainment. Their slogan is "animals are not ours to eat, wear experiment on, or use for entertainment." Our group project this week researched how PETA campaigned against big names like McDonalds, Burger King, Wendy's, and Safeway grocery.

Since October 1999, PETA has waged a series of successful campaigns against restaurant and grocery industries to improve the conditions for the animals. According to GoVeg.com, PETA had an 11-month campaign against McDonalds in September 2000. Their campaign stated that McDonalds' should stop buying eggs from suppliers that give less than 72 square inches of space per chicken in their coupes. In order to reduce bruising and painful injuries, they also had to institute more humane catching methods for catching chickens. Initiate audits of slaughterhouses, and for the first time ever, PETA urged McDonalds to stop working with several suppliers that were not operating in compliance with humane slaughter guidelines. McDonalds agree to make improvements in the way that they treat framed animals. This action marked a first time in history that a major corporation agreed to make improvements towards the welfare of farm animals.

PETA then went on and campaigned against Burger King in June 2001, however, they had the support from Alec Baldwin, James Cromwell, and Richard Pryor. Burger King agreed to conduct announced and unannounced inspections of its slaughterhouses, confine no more that five hens in a cage along with two water drinkers, and require that the birds should be able to stand upright before the bird went off to be killed. Burger King has also petitioned to the U.S. Department of Agriculture to enforce the Humane Slaughter Act. Subsequently, the campaign ended, Burger King continues to lead the fast
