In the book, Fallen Angels, the author, Walter Dean Myers, uses detail many times in the novel. He uses a protagonist character, Richard Perry, the narrator to tell us about the horrors and conflict of the Vietnam war. Like for example in this quote from page 31,"I thought I was hearing thunder. Then I realized that it was artillery.....in the distance someone was shooting of flares. Walter Dean Myers makes the artillery sound like thunder and creates it like that, in order for an image to come to my mind. Throughout the book, the author writes in this way as if he wants us to see how it was like for soldiers in the vietnam war to hear all those horrible sounds and scenes.

The author also shows plenty of broken grammer in the story too. In this quote from the novel on page 29,"How you know what it like if you ain't never been there?" He uses a lot of dialogue and uses unusual grammer in order to show the character's different perspectives. This only occurs when a character is saying something during combat or just at someone during a conversation or argument. Like for example in this quote from page 57, "How old you got to be to in Chicago to drink?""Old enough to carry some money to the man." was Peewee's response to Perry.

Several times in the novel, Walter Dean Myers has different tones throughout, with the majority of the characters. Like Perry for example when he wants to write to his little brother kenny but cannot because he cannot put his experience into words. Plus, when Perry has to send a letter to Lt. Carroll's Mother, and tells her what she deserves, the truth. Another way the author shows tone is when he uses it to inform or view the character's attitudes in a variety of ways. Like Peewee, when he talks trash in order to rid of his fear of going into combat. The way he makes fun of fellow soldiers is
