Finances

Finances are one of the most common problems in a relationship. It's not uncommon for a person to want a better life but sometimes it can put a strain on your relationship. Often people look at what others have and wish that they had the things that they see others with when what looks good is not always good. That was the case with Mathilde although see didn't realize she was rich in love. The Loisels were both victims of a tragic misfortune because they were ungrateful, dishonest, and had no common sense.

Mathilde in this story was very unhappy because she felt as though she was living under her means. While her husband was happy with their simple life, she often daydreamed of " expensive banquets with shining place settings" (5). She even had a "rich friend" whom she didn't want to see anymore because she cried when she got home about all the luxuries she saw her friend with (5). She didn't appreciate the things she had such a roof over her head, a good husband, and food to eat. Thinking that it would make her happy, her husband brought home an invitation. She wasn't happy about it because she felt like she didn't have anything decent to wear so he gave her money to purchase something nice. She still was not satisfied so she went back to her rich friend and borrowed what she thought was an expensive necklace which she ended up losing. Because Mathilde could not appreciate the things she had in her life she ended up losing out on her beauty and most of her life was wasted on hard work.

Honesty played a huge part in this story. As it unfolds, the story shows that Mathilde "settled" for a minor clerk (4). He could not afford to give her the life she often daydreamed about so she should have been honest and told him that she did not want to live a simple life with him. She wasn't honest about the life she actually wanted so she suffered a lot. The Loisels were very disloyal to friends by not being truthful about the fact that they lost Mrs. Forrestiers necklace. Instead of being honest to her they lied by saying that she was putting it in the shop because she broke it. Therefore, they ran around borrowing money from people not knowing if they could even pay it back. Had they been honest, they would have known that the necklace was not worth nearly as much as they thought it was.
