Propaganda is very important and effective tool in the formation and development of a dictatorship. A dictatorship is a form of government where the ruler has absolute power. An example of a dictator was the malicious Hitler who used modern technology to terrorize humanity. Much like Hitler, Mustapha Mond and his society used the system of totalitarianism (dictatorship) to control the civilized people in Brave New World.

"To be a leader means to be able to move the masses." (41) Hitler was able to control mass amounts of people, which had never previously been done in history. He did this by depriving his people of independent thought with propaganda in the form of devices such as the radio, loud-speaker, books, and the press. Hitler's first plan was to move the masses and then strip away their traditional customs and morals, thus brainwashing the people into following his ideals which included racism, anti-Semitism, and anti-Bolshevism. This can be compared to the propaganda used to control people in the Brave New World society. Similar to Nazi propaganda, the civilization used their modern technology to control their people. An example of technology used in the society was hypnopaedia. Hypnopaedia, or sleep learning, is a tool to implement ideals of the State. Both the state and the Nazi's used these tools to impose their power over the people.

Hitler strongest appeal was towards the lower and middle classes who were devastated by inflation and the great depression. He assembled thousands of people into great halls and arenas. When he gave his passionate speech, he won over the people, causing them to lose their power of reasoning and moral choices, which was referred to

as symptoms of "herd-poisoning" (45) in Brave New World Revisited. Hitler was an expert at manipulating and utilizing these effects for his personal political purposes. This propaganda is similar to subliminal messages used in the Brave New World society. Instead of public speaking, the state, in Brave New World, conditioned the inhabitants to act in a certain way for the efficiency of their society.
