This journal article gives strategies for helping English-language learners develop basic vocabulary so that they can read effectively. It addresses the problem that English-language learners face today, they need vocabulary to be able to read effectively; on the other hand, the best way for students to acquire vocabulary is through reading. The solution according to the article is to build basic vocabulary by identifying the most basic vocabulary, appropriateness of simplified material, benefits of extensive reading, strengths of explicit instruction in vocabulary, and the importance of using word notebooks and dictionaries.

Identification of the most basic vocabulary involves teachers giving priority to high-frequency words. There are, according to researchers, a group of 2,000 to 3,000 high-frequency words English-language teachers should focus on until the become sight words. Teachers can use Dolch words, which contain 220 words4k and The General Service List of English Words (GSL), which contain 2,000 high-frequency words.

Using simplified material is one of many factors that can enhance reading comprehension. Simplified text saves learners from struggling unnecessarily with difficult vocabulary. Graded readers are a good example od how to use simplified material. These kinds of reading material are written within a specific vocabulary range.

Extensive reading has two main characteristics: reading a large number of material and focusing on meaning rather than language. Extensive reading helps develop sight vocabulary, general vocabulary, and knowledge of language. Free voluntary reading is considered superior to direct instruction for acquisition of reading, vocabulary, grammar, and writing.

Using explicit instruction of vocabulary has been found to develop more vocabulary, learners are able to increase their vocabulary size thus having more sight vocabulary and reading better.
