The topic I picked was Identity theft. Identity theft is a serious crime in today's world. Identity theft occurs when someone uses your personal information such as your name, Social Security number, credit card number or other identifying information, without your permission to commit fraud or other crimes. Once the identity thief has your personal information, there are many things they can do with your information. They can use your information to go on shopping sprees, open new accounts, change mailing addresses, take out auto loans in your name, and establish phone or wireless services and many other things.

There are many ways you can protect yourself from having identity theft happen to you. One, never give out your personal information over the phone, through the mail or over the internet unless you've initiated the contact or are sure you know who you are dealing with. Another way is never carry your social security card with you; leave it in a secure place. Three, is secure personal information in your home, especially if you have roommates, employ outside help or are having service work done in your home. And last carry only the identification information and the number of credit and debit cards that you'll actually need. If you think you have been a victim of identity theft contact the fraud departments of any one of the three major credit bureaus to place a fraud alert on our credit file. As soon as the credit bureau confirms your fraud alert, the other two credit bureaus will be automatically notified to place fraud alerts, and all threw credit reports will be sent to you free of charge. Next close the accounts that you know or believe have been tampered with or opened fraudulently. Use the ID theft Affidavit when disputing new unauthorized accounts. Next file a police report, get a copy of the report and submit it to your creditors and others that may require proof of the crime. Next file your complaint with the FTC. The FTC maintains a database of identity theft cases used by law enforcement agencies for investigations. You can go to FTC.GOV or any of these three credit bureaus:
