What would you say to a foreigner moving to your home country?

When a foreigner moves to our country, I feel it important, that I should describe the Culture and existing conditions and inter communal differences that prevail in Sri Lanka. Although the foreigners know and have the impression of this country extraneously, they should be well informed of internal aspects of this country.

When talking about Sri Lanka, the Ancestors of prime communities of Sri Lanka (Tamils & Sinhalese) were from India.

Initially, the traditions and cultural practices seem to be different among Sri Lankans. As example we can mention the wedding and religious functions. Religious differences too prevail among these communities. In Tamil community we find Hindus and Christians along with Muslims (speaking Tamil as mother language). In Sinhala community we find Christians and Buddhists. No such inter-divisions in Burghers.

All the three languages which are spoken by four major communities have been given due place and respect - three languages are used in public places and Medias. However, Sinhala language is used widely rather than Tamil language with regard to state official matters.

Though the Sri Lankans live the modern life, yet the old traditions are adopted by them. For examples, people generally appear in modern / western costumes, but for important times they wear national or traditional dresses - such as sarees by Tamil & Singala females; vesti and sarongs by Tamil and Sinhala males.

Importantly, influx of Europeans can be said the very reason for the basic changes that took places in Sri Lanka. Christianity has contributed to the progress of especially the education, scientific knowledge and medical knowledge etc and consequently we can see today large number
