Human Agency and Social Movements

The Black Panther party is a society that is focused on serving the needs of the oppressed people in their communities and gives them protection against the people who were oppressing them. They wanted to raise the consciousness of the oppressed people and help them move towards deliverance. This party was arranged for the struggling African Americans to have a structured organization that would represent their means and desires. They were a very radical and outspoken group that seems like it would be very intimidating with all the demands they were setting.

I believe this to be a revolutionary movement because they are focusing on the absolute turn-around of the African American people. They demand full employment for their "people", completely free healthcare for all the black and oppressed, immediate freedom for all black and oppressed people who were being held in U.S., Federal and State, county, city and army jails. These demands can't simply just be met by society, you can't just give people what they ask for or else where would there be any order?

The civil rights webpage is an informatory site that is always up to date on its news and information regarding the rights of American Citizens. It is comprised of the top issues of our society as a whole, including affirmative action, education, voting rights and religious freedom. It is a step towards overcoming discrimination and reaching towards an understanding of economic and social justice for all.

I see this as being a reform movement because it is helping people to realize the rights that they do have that might have been taken away from them in some way. It is not looking to totally redo, but to restore and possibly improve civil rights as they stand today. They address issues in our society and try to find the best possible solution for them. It is important to this organization that everyone knows what is going on in our world, they bring together issues and information and see that is it right that people should be informed.

GLAAD; Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation is a group that is dedicated to promoting and guaranteeing a fair and accurate representation of people and events as a means of eliminating homophobia and discrimination based solely on gender identity. They are working to remove negative images that people have against the gay and lesbian community.

Being another reform movement, GLAAD is just seeking to change ideas that people have about gays and lesbians. They claim to be just like anyone else and find it discriminating that they are seen differently just because they are attracted to someone of the same sex. They also want rights to be able to express themselves which also could be a sort of resistance movement. In the states that it isn't already legal, gays and lesbians are fighting for same sex marriages, going against traditional values.

Disability rights group ACT (advocating change together) focuses on helping people with disabilities understand that they too are a part of society and have a voice. Raising awareness
