Introduction

Social problems are issues which are considered to affect some or all members of the society either directly or indirectly. Whenever people come to live together in a social setting, conflict arises from their differences in opinions regarding religion, political issues, cultural practises, and other health and hygiene issues. We can say that social problems are virtually inevitable. The various social problems present today vary from society to society, and as such, we cannot say that all societies face similar social issues. Social problems encompass economic, political, and human life issues within society. We can also include ethnic issues, poverty, wealth, religion, unemployment, pollution, natural resource, and property ownership as some common reasons for rise of social conflict in many societies (Maxon, 2006).

Causes and solutions

Social problems mainly result from the difference in economic disparities among social settings. The rich access different and better service from what the poor do, and this causes quite a large number of problems for society. The poor lack proper education, which results in a large number of them lacking employment, thus they indulge in crime, drug abuse, and prostitution. These are issues that affect the whole society negatively, even giving rise to incurable diseases (Margaret L. Andersen, 2007). The same disparities also make it hard for the poor to access proper medical services, which may lead to easy spread of diseases, and ultimately death; due to insufficiency of money to access proper medication, fatalities may occur more frequently in poverty stricken regions than they would in well established regions (Ellis-Christensen, 2011). These problems can be avoided if those in power lived as an example to their subjects. The leaders should fight corruption, and trying to find solutions to problems faced in the society. Creation of jobs would work as a good solution to these problems. Equal development of all regions would also ensure that all members of the society are treated equally and therefore such disparities between the poor and the rich would reduce (Stout, 2004).

Political issues also cause problems in society. Politics are the basis of most of the opinions members of the society side with, on various issues affecting them. Politics also results in people supporting specific candidates or political parties due to their ethnic background. This causes ethnic clashes during political rallies and elections, for example the post-election violence experienced in Kenya after the 2007 elections. In this regard, politicians should be encouraged to stop preaching ethnicity and instead base their political affiliations on issues that cater to all members of the society and not just a specific tribe. This will encourage peace, and ethnic problems will be a thing of the past.

Overcrowding also causes social problems. This is because there will be insufficient resources to satisfy all people living in an overcrowded area. Land will be scarce, thereby leading to conflicts that are land- related, living conditions in some areas will be improper, leading to those people living in such areas experiencing diseases and other health issues (Margaret L. Andersen, 2007). Another cause
