Telecommunications

It was my senior year in high school and I can distinctly remember how I used to marvel at computers, fascinated with its' every detail. That was September 1984 through June 1985, over twenty-three years ago. I can also remember typewriters, video games, and how technology was not as advanced as it is today. Technology has, and always will have a significant impact on life in the United States of America. It is in my opinion; the technological change that has had the largest effect on life in North America is telecommunications. Currently, the United States is the most technologically advanced country in the area of telecommunications. There are approximately 126 million phone lines, 7.5 million cellular phone users, 5 thousand AM radio broadcast stations, 5 thousand FM radio stations, 1 thousand television broadcast stations, 9 thousand cable television systems, 530 million radios, 193 million television sets, 24 ocean cables, and scores of satellite facilities! History1.html, (1998). "This is truly an "Information Age" and sometimes, you need to look at where we've been in order to see the future more clearly!" History1.html, Tampa Bay Interactive, Inc., (1998).

Telecommunications technology has had the largest effect on life versus other technological advancements. Perhaps the greatest single influence on the practice of medicine is technology. More important than surgery, drugs, rehabilitative therapy, or even increased monies is the rise of technological breakthroughs--from personal computing to the Internet and wireless communications--that will truly revolutionize the medical profession. Raj Gupta, (2005), For The Record, Vol. 17, No. 11, pp. 22.
