Work Environment Paper

Good communication skills are imperative for organizations to carry out in an attempt to maintain outstanding performance from employees and management. Every workplace is unique in terms of their diversity profile therefore, is it vital for organization to create and execute creative communication methodologies that will enable organizations to develop a community rather than just your average run of the mill work environment. For example, active listening, collective goal setting and consistent training are all examples of tools in which organizations can effectively use to promote and execute effective communication within the workplace. So how well do individuals within an organization communicate with each other? This paper will analyze the amount, types, options, location and speed of communication that is practiced within the FACS Group Inc culture. In addition, this paper will explain how effective team building applies to FACS Group Inc work environment. Furthermore, this paper will include a brief summary of the selected chapter on effective team building, as well as provide my own communication analysis.

Business leaders in today’s society are looking for solutions to empower and retain employees through technology. Financial Administrative and Credit Services (FACS Group Inc.) is the credit services and centralized financial and administrative support resource for all Federated divisions such as, Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s. As an organization, FACS handles all projects that involve credit authorizations, new account development, customer service, collections, catalog and dotcom sales, (www.facsgroup.com). Within my assigned department, as an auditor, different levels of communication are practices on a day-to-day basis. For example, as an auditor, we often communicate nonverbally to another shared center in a different state in an attempt to produce weekly, monthly and annual forecasting, reports and audits.

Most often the use of a shared computer network or drive enables both centers to obtain the needed information to actively complete the needed reports. In addition, the use of e-mail or Lotus Notes allows specific individuals to communicate and transfer needed information quickly. Also, the development of a shared Intranet web site enables each center to obtain data, memorandums, up to date statistics for each location, as well as best practice procedures, all of which can be obtain within a matter of seconds. This type of technology allows for a more productive and knowledgeable department.

Secondly, building and maintaining effective teams is a time consuming and sensitive process particularly in business. Research shows there are a number of key reasons why team building fails… They include the inability of the team or the organization to establish clear goals… the inability by the team to clearly define its own roles within the team, and poor leadership of the team or the organization (Wildblood, 2005). FACS Group Inc is an organization that is structured on team building and working as a team. For example, the management team or leaders work on three different levels. First, a group of associates are assigned, as a team, to a supervisor. Secondly, each supervisor along with his or her teams is managed under an assigned manager. Lastly, each management team reports to the director of the department. Through this process, effective team building and interpersonal communication, allows FACS Group Inc the opportunity to further develop and become more competitive. In addition, FACS Group Inc collectively intentionally create team-based structures which require individuals to be more adaptable and form or re-form work relationships quickly and smoothly (Prager, 1999).

The methodology of effective team building is best explained through organizational models, communication and result-oriented processes. For example, organizations my chose to use different guidelines in an attempt to determine which team programs will prove to be beneficial to the organization as a whole. The selected chapter provides five different guidelines in which organizations should consider when shaping teams or team programs. First, look for a program that fits the corporate culture. Second, be sure that the outcome meets training goals. Third, find training that will translate skills back to the workplace. Fourth, place people outside of their comfort zone, but not so far away that they are scared to get the message. Finally, get away to a different environment.

Furthermore, communication analysis can be defined as an original speech which explains, analyses or evaluates a communication artifact such as, speech, advertisement, text, symbol, icon etc (Gustavus, 2005). Within my own work environment, I often use thematically coherent speech in an attempt to present adequate information in an attempt to properly inform my audience or a single person with new information or new guideline rather then consistently repeating already known information regarding the task at hand. In regard to FACS Group Inc as an organization, I have the opportunity to use effective language non-verbally during weekly morning meeting. For example, during the weekly morning meeting I am able to effectively demonstrate direct communication through eye-contact and good posture. In addition, conducting the weekly morning meetings gives me the opportunity to actively enhance my enunciation using correct grammar and pronunciation.

In conclusion, in today’s rapid changing environment the ability to communicate well within the workplace has proven to be more important then ever (Learning Point, 2002). In an attempt for organizations to maintain competitive while consistently meeting outstanding performance from their employees and management, it is imperative for organizations to communicate effectively and to actively create and execute creative communication methodologies. Such actions will result in the development of a community between co-workers within the workplace. This paper analyzed the various types of communication such as amount, options, location and speed of communication which is presently practiced within the FACS Group Inc culture. In addition, this paper clearly explained how effective team building applies to FACS Group Inc work environment. In addition, the paper includes a brief summary of the selected chapter on effective team building, as well as provides example of my own communication analysis.
