What is Culture?

What is culture? A word that's confused and misinterpreted everyday. Culture is the idea of what is wrong or right, the concept of what is acceptable within our society. Culture serves us as a guide, taking us to the "right way" and helping us to make sense of things that surrounds us. There are many different cultures around the world. A lot of them are similar in specific ways and others are just completely different, this difference explains why we think that people from different backgrounds are "weird". So today in this essay I will explain how culture is everywhere around me and how it makes me who I am.

Cooking! Cooking is a big thing in my family and culture. Around this time every year, my family and I would get together at my moms house and cook. As usual, the woman would cook and the men would sit around watching games, chatting, and drinking. How typical right? Well not actually. On holidays most African Americans normally eat/cook "Soul Food". Soul Food, which mainly consist of: greens, chicken, black eyed peas, corn bread, etc... But my family has mixtures of cultures, not just African American decent, we also have Puerto Rican. So by that being said, we may sometimes cook rice and beans, salad, and baked ribs. Just because we are from African American decent, doesn't necessarily mean we have to abide by our ancestors traditions.

"Like technical language, slang is used by a specific group." And culture. For instance my culture has always had our own language. Words like groovy or hip meant something desirable to the teens that used them thirty years ago. Today, we have new words or phrases. Some examples include: My bad meaning my mistake, So to emphasize something: "We are going to so win tonight's volleyball match." and last but not least Wassup? Another way to say "Hi". In my culture we use slang to communicate with one another without "outsiders" understanding the meaning. In the preceding example, us teens can use slang to exclude our parents and teachers from the conversation.

Culture and fashion are in a constantly expanding positive feedback loop. The greatest changes in human culture are almost always the result of fashion innovation. In my opinion
