Time, money, and patience is a struggle for all parents but twice as hard for single parents. As a single parent myself I feel the struggle every day. Single parents work twice as hard to keep their household in order. Is this fair?

As a single parent you are forced to be a magician; you need to make two people into one. That itself takes a lot of time, time that could be used for homework, laundry, work or just down time for you. Time management is very important. You must make sure your children don’t feel neglected and as a parent you aren’t wearing yourself two thin. The biggest struggle as I see it is deciding what’s most and least important. Spending time with your children is very important, but at the same time washing clothes, cooking dinner, and paying bills must be done. Normally in a two parent household this time struggle isn’t that large of the deal because you split your duties but single parents have it a lot harder.

In Indiana alone there are nearly 220,000 single-parent homes according to a recent census report. Out of those 220,000 single parents the top issue is money. Single parents have to feed, clothe and educate their children with only one income. This is a struggle. You have one income to spread out for 10 million things. Example, childcare according to an article on www.ourindianahome.org in some part of Indiana childcare can cost up $7000 annually. On average a single mother can bring home $1470 a month (www.ourindianahome.org) this after taxes. A two bedroom apartment on average will cost $622 a month and childcare is about $582. This leaves the average single mother with $266 or less to pay all other bills and anything else they may need for the month. As a single parent you try to cut cost where you can unfortunately it’s not always the best for the kids. They can live in a better neighborhood and school district and have less money to live off of for things like
