Teens depression and suicide effective prevention and intervention strategies
Depression is one of the major illness of teen mental health and it is increasing in high effecting in many suicides by teenagers across the world, because of the irresponsible of some parents. People that have had suicidal thoughts before and are below the age of 40 years old and at a risk of dying early from the cardiovascular disease most of them are women. Teens now than ever are piously having depression problems; depression for both adults and teens is the number one psychological health disease in America. It is affecting teens the hardest their minds because they cannot handle compulsion.
What is the reason for Teen Depression?
The reason for teen depression has several different sources cause of genetics can likely develop depression in teens also drugs and alcohol can modify the brain to be unenthusiastic, social, school, work, and personal pressure causes depression. A teen living in extreme stress, violence, poverty, eating disorder, and illness addicted parents are likely to become depressed. Therefore, teens living in procedures such as death, changing schools, moving, and parents divorcing could generate depression. Depression is a serious health problem that affects more than 40 million teenagers and adults in the U.S, but since it is often not validated or detected, the image is probably much higher, and it is also increasing in young and adults. Depression causes unhealthy lifestyles and has a clear correlation with suicide, sleeping and eating disorders, smoking, alcoholism, the runaway from family and friends in addiction drugs. Certainly, all these ensure and other effects which diminish the quality of life, it has been shown to contribute to the development of cancer, and progress. (Karen Wilkes, 1997)
The American Foundation for suicide prevention (2010), ‘estimates that approximatively 3 in 4 suicidal individuals show warning signs to a family member or friends’’. Although the key elements to preventing teens depression and suicide are professionals, parents, teachers, workers, afterschool program, and other supportive adults are to remain aware of such warning signs and risk factors and to appropriately intervene when required.
It is important to highlight the common warning signs of teens depression, so people can recognize them and remember to note that many of these warning signs are also shared signs of teens suicide. Therefore, early discernment and intervention are critical to preventing suicidal or self- harmful behaviors.
Teens suicidal warning signs encompass in three groups:
1 behavioral warning signs
2 verbal warning signs
3 stressful live events.
Behavioral warning signs include a specific action that teens display when examining suicide. Verbal warning signs contain statements or phrases may teens produce suicide, and stressful life event cover with occurrences as trauma, upsetting, trouble, and experiences that lead teens to suicide.
The key component to prevent teen depression and suicide is the connection to others such as safety that is directly associated with positive emotional health: family connectedness, school relatedness, and community integration (Turner & Lloyd, 1999).
Effects of Teen Depression
Some other issues caused by teen depression are: One out of three teens with depression issues will develop a substance abuse problem. Depressed teens are less likely to move on in life and make successful careers. They are more likely to struggle with their relationships. Depression often leads to suicide; in fact, it is the number one reason for teen’s death. Ninety percent of suicide victims have a form of mental illness; those with depression are 10 times more likely to attempt suicide. The fact remains that teen depression is a serious issue that needs to be addressed. A very alarming teen depression fact is that one out of three teens won’t get any help. Seeing that over 80% of teens with depression issues can be treated that is a very high number.
Responding to a Student’s Depression.
Sixteen-year-old in 9 grades student has been on shocking down throughout his first semester and the first year at Academy of Mathematics and science it is a public magnet high school in Carson, Nigeria than he is ever attended since he left Brasilia tree years ago. He has lost interesting in most daily school activities, sad more often, always quiet, and has a difficult time to concentrate. While he always got good grades before when he was in the old school, his grades have steadily dropped. He has made no friends and tries to spend his extra time after school with a small group of teachers. Students characterize him as irritating and difficult to attempt companionships or conversation. He mewls often, exceedingly shy, and does not clutch interest to common to teenage like him. The small group teachers he interacts intimately at school have no danger signs in his attitude. He has told one teacher, that his parents are fighting all the time for no reason. He confesses that he feels detached and severely anxious about the request of the high school. He feels that he has no place to live or no person at home to turn to; both of his parents work and when they are home, they always fight. He feels abandoned at home with his sibling around him, also he is confessed to one of his teachers that he is thinking of death, so he can leave the loneliness live he is living.
A persistent sad or irritable mood decreased interest with activities or antecedent enjoy activities, feelings loneliness, dropping down, repeated of suicide has signs of depression, although adolescents with depression may also show appetite changes producing in weight gain or loss, trouble with sleep, and increase oppositional behavior, and have a handicap with concentration. When depression is identified early, and professionals furnish treatment, teenagers can experience improved mood and function better in school and life. School personnel must have played a role impotent by detecting or identifying teens depressed. Teachers, administrators, and other school staff must also be acknowledgeable about depression because the disorder can seriously affect academic and interpersonal behavior at school. Cognitive issues may include failure tolerance for frustration and negative designs of thinking ability. Depressed students often give up quickly on duty they perceive as difficult, refuse to attempt academic work they find too challenging, and rapidly doubt their ability to independently complete an academic assignment or solve problems. Memory, speech, and motor activity, and the ability to plan that may be affected, also depressed teens and adults are inactive, speak heavy, and have difficulty completely expressing through ideas.
