No two places in the world are exactly the same. No matter how near or far apart, there is always something that is different and unique. There are many characteristics that make each area distinct. The northern and southern colonies of the New World in the 17th century were no exception; and, although there were many factors that caused these distinctions, it is evident that geography was the primary source of these differences.

One may express that the economies of these areas was what made them unique; but, if they would delve beneath that, they would realize that at this time in history, geography determined an area's economy. For example, the northern colonies based their economy on shipbuilding and fishing. This showed that they intelligently used their geography to their advantage when choosing an industry to pursue. The southern colonies also used their geography to their advantage. The acres upon acres of farmland made these colonies the perfect area for plantations. The coast of the southern colonies, gave them easy access to the importation of African slaves to work on these plantations as well.

Others may argue that religion was the sole factor of the distinctions between the colonies. But again, these religions came over and settled in different geographical regions of the New World; and after the settlers came over, the religions mixed in certain regions. Maryland, for instance, was tolerable of all individuals who believed in the divinity of God. So by showing one sole colony that was accepting of the numerous religions that were brought from Europe, which contradicts the statement, that religion was the major distinguishing factor of the northern and southern colonies.

So, as anyone can see, geography was the primary factor that distinguished the north from the south in the colonial 17th century. The evidence is blatant to anyone who researches the subject. And although there were differences in the economy
