Laila Continued

Experiences: -Both of her brothers dying in war. -Mother almost completely ignoring her. -Giti's death. -Tariq and his family moving. -Her house being blown up and both her parents dying. -Marrying Rasheed. -Having her kids.

Character: Very intelligent, strong, and independent.

Similarities and Differences

Mariam and Laila don't have many similarities because they were both raised in completely different family situations. Mariam was a harami and Laila had both her parents. Mariam had no education other than the reading of the Koran, while Laila had education until the war caused her to be taken out of school. Mariam was quite, reserved, and took everything that came her way and never stood up for herself. Laila was very intelligent and open. She stood up for herself and was extremely independent. The only similar thing they both had in common was their marriages to Rasheed and the beatings they received from him.

Mariam

Background:

Mariam was a harami, and her father was a well known rich man named Jalil. She lived with her Nana outside of a villege that was outside of Herat. She lived in a Kolba for 15 years until her life changed.

Education

: She did not have any education other than being taught the koran and multiple prayers. Also, she learned how to read, all by the help of Mullah Faizullah.

: -Father wouldn't accept her, and let him live in his house. -Mother killed herself.

-Married off to Rasheed and had to leave hometown. -Beaten by Rasheed. -Lost countless babies. -Killing Rasheed.
