The quote that I will discuss in this paper is located on page 163 in the second paragraph; "Either God is or he is not." But to which view shall we be inclined? Reason cannot decide this question. Infinite chaos separates us.At the far end of this infinite distance a coin is being spun which will come down heads or tails. How will you wager? Reason cannot make you choose either, reason cannot prove either wrong...Let us weigh up the gain and loss involved in calling heads that God exists. Let us assess the two cases; if you win, you win everything and if you lose you lose nothing. Do not hesitate then; wager he does exist.
This passage is something that I feel is definitely important in the aspect of God, It questions whether he exists or doesn't exist. Since as we know there isn't any definite proof that God either exists or doesn't exist. Its basically up to the individual whether he or she decides to live in the path of God or to not. This passage above basically states that if you do believe and follow the path of God, not only will you follow in the way that you thought God wanted you too, but you will know that you lived your life the best way possible and when you die if God exists then you will have eternal life and go to heaven, and if he doesn't you will have basically wasted you time and your life living in the pathway of something that so happens not to even exist. Now on the other hand if you choose not to believe and not to follow in the ways of God and the individual dies and, God does indeed exist they will suffer eternally. If when they die there is not God to judge then they will have then have a reason, why their entire life they doubted that God existed and they will have been right. The one problem I find with this passage is that they are say, "well even if you don't believe you should since you really have nothing to lose in the first place, since when you die if you have believed you will live eternally in heaven, and if you didn't then you will have been right all along. Faith in God isn't all about the reward in the end, its about reward in your life day by day now. If you sin, and hurt people, you will suffer throughout your life, because you will be miserable.
In one's life there are many things that can be doubted and questioned over and over and still no direct truth, this is a prime example. If God exists we know from scripture
