We first started our research going after the obvious information. For example, what is Alzheimer's and what are the causes and effects. One major cause of Alzheimer's was cell death, but cell death was just the beginning. The specific cells that were involved were neurons located in the brain. We later found out that synaptic plasticity played a major role in the cause of Alzheimer’s disease and cell death, which caused us to dive even deeper into the more complicated research on neuroscience. The nerve cells, or neurons, transport memories using neurotransmitters. After that we discovered that the area between both cells was called the synapses. Then we narrowed our broad category into one question to lead us to the answer: how could we increase the strength of those synapses? The answer lies in two things, an existing medication that helps with the symptoms of Alzheimer’s and calcium. This might sound too good to be true, but it isn’t. If we can find a way to combine the two, then it could prevent Alzheimer’s disease. This would work because the more calcium, the higher probability of releasing transmitters and carrying information that would otherwise be lost. Now you may be asking yourself, “Why haven't scientists tried this already?” The answer is simply because they haven't been able to test it yet or just haven’t found the connections between them. Throughout the extensive research and several overlapping connections, we came to the amazing conclusion that we have thought of something that can cure Alzheimer’s disease, a feat that scientists have been working towards for years.
