Paper 1
Who's Correct?
In this article by John Kelso titled "My Bad Grammar" both the reader and the writer make very good points. As a reader one expects a newspaper writer to have good grammar. Writers are expected to meet certain standards about their grammar and be able to write in a proper manner, not to forget that writers are also human beings and all humans make mistakes. Therefore writers are bound to make mistakes at times and can get frustrated about lots of hateful comments about minor mistakes.
As a reader I expect an article to make sense and have good grammar or at least descent grammar. A writer should always try his best to get the message across in a proper manner. The reader has the right to complain about his grammar because as a writer Kelso should be required to meet certain standards about the way he writes, but they should also cut him some slack. It is very interesting to read the way Kelso replies back to the hateful readers who always send him hateful comments about his grammar. It shows them how annoying they get. It makes a lot of sense to complain when it comes to significant mistakes, but something small such as "him or her" is too much.
Writers should always try to do their best at having good grammar especially when they work for a public paper. Writers should always try to avoid making significant mistakes as much as possible. Readers should not make such a big deal about minor mistakes it can be frustrating and annoying. John Kelso is a human being; therefore, he will make mistakes once in a while. Nobody's perfect.
