Wizard's First Rule Book Review

Wizard's First Rule starts off with a young man named Richard Cypher wandering in the woods of Westland. Westland is where most of the story takes place, along with the Midlands. Richard notices that the Boundary, a gateway to the underworld that also separate Westland from the Midlands, is breaking down. On his way back to tell the High Councilor, he sees a beautiful young woman running through the trees. He also sees four dangerous-looking men following her. He heads toward her to direct her down a different path to lose her stalkers. She is distrustful at first, but soon determines that Richard is not a threat and tells him her name is Kahlan Amnell. Richard senses an unusual power about her, but shrugs it off.

The two go to see Zedd, an old friend of Richard's. Shortly after, Richard discovers that Zedd is, in fact, a wizard, not the simple, cloud-loving man that he thought he knew his whole life. As Kahlan and Zedd talk, Richard slowly begins to piece together some details. Kahlan is from the Midlands; she came to find the First Wizard who crossed into Westland before the creation of the Boundary and disappeared. Zedd was that wizard, realizes a shocked Richard.

Kahlan informs Zedd on events happening on the other side of the Boundary...An evil ruler called Darken Rahl is leading his armies against the Midlands. He seeks the three mysterious boxes of Orden, magical devices that could destroy the world if opened in the wrong order. He will stop at nothing to get them.

Then, Zedd names Richard the Seeker of Truth, and bequeaths to him the Sword of Truth, a magical sword that draws its power from the user's anger. Together, the three, with another old friend of Richard's, Chase, who is a boundary warden, travel towards the Midlands to stop Darken Rahl.

However, when they get close to the Boundary, they are attacked by underworld beasts. Zedd and Chase are touched by the beasts and fall into a magical stupor, unable to travel. Kahlan and Richard leave their friends in the hands of Adie, a witch who promises she will take care of them, and who also gives them a charm to get through the Boundary unscathed. The two continue their journey and go to the Mud People, a peaceful tribe who point them in the direction of Shota, a witch/prophetess. Supposedly she is the only one who can tell them where the last Box of Orden is.

After that, they rejoin with Zedd, who is returned to full health. Richard, who has been falling in love with Kahlan, learns that she is a Confessor, a being with the power to make others fall completely under her spell, or kill with the slightest touch. Not only that, but she is the Mother Confessor, who is so powerful that she is higher in the social hierarchy than a queen. Their love is forbidden, a fact that Richard must learn to live with.

Then, they continue to hunt Darken Rahl, and he is eventually killed. I'm omitting quite a lot here, but it is a very long book! Anyway,
