THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

Today, high school students have their different techniques on how they manage their own time in terms of productivity and efficiency. Having this skill is a great way to make students learning be effective. But not all students have this kind of skill, what if students struggle on managing their time because of different factors like lack of sleep, class schedules and dose of tasks? In modern times like these, academic performance is not only the focus of students but also participating in different extra-curricular activities to maintain good grades. Time management plays a vital role in student’s performance both academic and non-academic. Therefore, students should use the allotted time based on their priorities. Here time management is only possible through self-motivation, performance, ability and motivation (Brigitte, Claessens, Eerde, & Ruth, 2005). The secret to achieving success in life is effectively managing this resource that  everyone  possesses  equally  and  paying  sufficient  emphasis  to  planning  (Macan,  Shahani,  Dipboye & Phillips, 2000).

In this study, the researchers will focus on how class schedule can influence the time management and academic performance of a student. In Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Valenzuela morning and afternoon shifts of senior high school students are implemented. The researchers should know the preferences of the said shifts in terms of productivity and time management. The researchers also observed the difficulties certain students facing due to shifting schedules. Lack of sleep, stress and time pressure are major factors that can alter the time management of students particularly in higher level. It is also important to know how huge is the impact of sleep pattern to the students who attends the said shifts. The biological rhythm that governs our sleep-wake cycle is called the circadian rhythm, a hard-wired “clock” in the brain that controls the production of the sleep-inducing hormone melatonin. During adolescence, there are major changes in one’s circadian rhythm. More adult-like patterns of REM sleep develop, there are increases in daytime sleepiness, and there is a shift in the circadian rhythm toward a more own-like tendency for later bed and wake-up times Cardinali (2008), Crowley et al. (2007), Carskadon et al. (1993), Wolfson & Carskadon (1998).

The researchers will use the Leichardt Scale and/or Interviews. The researchers chose this method because it is the most convenient way to execute this research. They will be using it to scale how senior high school students are using time management efficiently despite the shift they are unto. This study will help to analyze the positive or negative impact of time management on academic performance of students. It will also help to make some decision about changes we would like to make use our time more effectively (Noftle, Robins & Richard, 2007).

The problem is moderately serious and needs a response because the sleep and rest of the students are majorly at stake that may affect the performance of every student in a specific class. The lack of sleep of individuals particularly students greatly affect the health and wellness of the students. The setting on where the study will take place is Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Valenzuela Main Campus, Poblacion II, Malinta, Valenzuela City. The target respondents of the study are senior high school students on different shifts and strands. The major task of the researchers are to know if there is really an effect of shifting schedules on the students specifically senior high school students at Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Valenzuela.

There are indicators that can define poor time management. Poor punctuality, having this habit leads to a difficulty in coping up with repetitive tasks. Poor performance is also an indicator because it can also result into a poor outcome while doing tasks. Procrastination will also be an indicator because of those students who has unfinished tasks. Restlessness and stress that causes lack of energy to do certain tasks.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The research aims to answer the following questions:

  1. What are the benefits of choosing their shift schedules on their time management?
  2. How those benefits affect their preferences of choosing their shift schedule?
  3. How preferences affect their time management?

One of the most efficient ways to do all your responsibilities and works accordingly is to manage your time properly. But how can you manage your time if there are external factors that hinders you from doing such thing. Many of the students face difficulties in managing time because of external factors such as stress, pressure, overload of tasks and many more.

The research aims to know the effect of shifting of schedules on the time management of students. Students tend to limit the effort they exert on tasks to minimize the time required to do such things. Thus, the research seeks to answer problems regarding the effects of shift schedules to the time management of the students.
