Essay 1 #: Discussion

“Trigger warning “are defined as alerted when there are a sensitive topic mentioned in an academic institution and can possibly cause a traumatic experience. Back in the day, when I was a high school student attending my normal sociology class, I remember the teacher once triggered us about the content of the video that she was about to show us since it related to sexual abuse, rape and murder. It is totally reasonable for that action to be conducted in order to give the students a notification because we have never known the people who have been through such situation and still remain haunted about it. When it comes to the reality of the outside world out of the academic institution, It is also recognizable that we still see some trigger warning somewhere, ranging from a trigger introduction of a movie before it broadcast or a trigger warning label of a food product that can cause allergy to a speaker triggers about the sensitivity of the content that he is going to show the audience. In my point of view, there is no specific rule or regulation applied to trigger warning, this is just a term originated form the essence of sympathy and humanity; It is depended on the users who use it in different circumstances to determine its harmfulness or benefit toward the society in general and the academic institution in particular. In another way, a little heads up about the image or content that potential can cause traumatic experience can help students engage with uncomfortable and complex topics and a little sensitivity to others is totally harmless.  However, to some extent when looking at the bigger picture, ‘trigger warning’ can also be the reverse result of oversensitivity which can limit the core content of a diverse classroom ,forcing the students to follow the identical thinking pattern with the lack of creativity. Avoiding the solutions will not help to resolve it; It does not prepare the students with the practical emotion and behavior, burying them underground before the exploitation of the hardness of the real world conquer and destroy them mentally.  Leaders or speakers are not built upon from the trigger warning environment; in fact, they are motivated to deal with the problem directly and speak up to raise their voice out of the controversial. I believe that not every controversial topic should be hided under table for the sake of others emotion. Every now and then, we have learnt from the ancient that the controversial and the debatable topic force the society to discover and transform ; the word ‘trigger’ in trigger warning could also means trigger the revolutionary of nature to create a softer but not safer society. In a diversity classroom, the exposers of ideas with a different perspective comes from people in a different background and cultural will foster their ability to learn deeply and understand how the other side is coming from. Debating and interacting with different perspectives help teacher maintain the harmony of the classroom as well as preparing student themselves to adapt with the harmony of the diversity of society in their real world.
