A comparison of two tragedies
William Shakespeare was the creative mind behind some of the world's greatest plays and tragedies. Two of his most famous tragedies were Romeo and Juliet and Julius Caesar. One definition of a tragedy is that it depicts serious incidents in which characters undergo a change from happiness to suffering, often involving the death of others, as well as the main characters. This definition proves true in both Romeo and Juliet and Julius Caesar.
Romeo and Juliet is a romantic tragedy involving two young lovers who came from different backgrounds and families who rivaled each other and thought they found that love conquered all. Romeo and Juliet's immaturity was depicted by the fact that they fell in love at first sight and married in secret only days after meeting one another. Their families had a strong hatred towards each other and only through Romeo and Juliet's deaths, were they able to bring peace to their families. Romeo and Juliet is more than a story about love and tragic fate. It is about people and their strengths and weaknesses.
In Romeo and Juliet they create their own fate by the fact that if they had confided in their families about their secret relationship, they might have been able to persuade them that their love was real and ultimately might not have met their fate of death so young. Juliet was only 13 years old when she fell in love with Romeo. She was innocent and hopeful and dreamt of true love. They both thought they had found true love with each other but were probably too young to know the difference between true love and infatuation. This was a tragedy that was caused by Romeo and Juliet and could have been prevented if they had not reacted with their hearts.
Julius Caesar is a serious, political tragedy having to do with power, control and betrayal. Julius Caesar was ambitious, in control and was soon to be king.
