Kauai- A Hawaiian Adventure
As I look out into the sea, I can taste the salt in the air and watch little rainbows glisten through the ocean’s spray. I feel relaxed as I take in the scenery and think about all the activities that will take place over the next week. It’s always been my dream to honeymoon in Hawaii. And I can see that it will be a dream worth waiting for.
Kauai was formed an estimated 600 million years ago. It is 550 miles wide and the fourth largest of all the Hawaiian Islands. We start our adventure on the south shore. If you’re going to Hawaii, you must spend ample time at the beautiful beaches. We roll the windows down on our car as we drive. There’s nothing like feeling the salty air on your face and being able to taste the water when you’re miles away. When you first step onto the sandy shore, your toes sink into the soft, warm sand. It’s hard to walk at first. You must search out the best location for your stuff. Close enough to the water to get an occasional spray of refreshing, cool water but far enough away so that you don’t get taken in by the tide. In my option, the best thing to do at the beach is go snorkeling. It’s so unnatural, but extremely fun, to be able to breath and see underwater. The sea life that you can get up close and personnel to, are so vibrant and original. The many different species o fish you can swim along side of, and touch, is something that you can’t find in our everyday life. We saw a family of endangered sea turtles. They were so big that I could have held on to one of them and let it take me for a ride. It’s so exhilarating that, if you don’t keep watch, you will end up miles from shore. It’s also very tiring. So, after a nice swim, it feels so good to lay-out on the warm sand and let you muscles relax. There’s nothing like feeling the warmth of the sand on the back side of you, while the sun warms the top side. It’s easy to fall asleep. And before you know, it you’re redder than the lobster you were just swimming next to.
One of my other favorite activates to do on the ocean is boating. We took a nice long boat ride up the west shore. We were lucky enough to see a family of humpback whales. One of then had just given birth and the rest of them were staying close to protect the young whale and its’ mother. We also saw a lot of dolphins swimming close to our boat and trying to keep up. I wanted to jump out and swim with them. We pulled into a cove and were able to get out and swim. Some of us went scuba diving and others of us took the time to do more snorkeling. They gave us cans of spray cheese to feed the fish. And they loved it! They would just swarm around us to get some. On the way back, we saw some of the most beautiful scenery. Cliffs that had lush greenery growing from them but at the same time, had colors of red, purple, blue, and gray.
Of course you can’t go to Hawaii without attending an authentic luau. You get to experience the traditional luau cuisine. Poi laulau, kalua pig, and lomi salmon are some of the most popular items. They also have all types of sea food for you to taste. I prefer to sick to the more common dishes. Or “boring” as my husband calls it. For people like me with a more bland palate, they have everything from doughnuts to Mexican food.
Another thing you must seek out while you’re in the tropical islands, are there many native grown fruits. Everything from there sweet, juicy pineapple, to the rich, almost bitter guava are available to buy and have shipped home. Some of there other popular fruits are the mango and papaya. They also have home grown coffee that is so rich you can smell it all over the island.
Waimea Canyon is another hot spot for visitors especially
