A striking resemblance
After reading a good man is hard to find by flannery O connor and where are you going and
where have you been by Joyce carol oats , I see that they both have similar and difference. The
two characters , one is adolescent and beautiful , the other is elderly and outdated , Connie is a
teenage girl who is mentioned in the story where are you going ? where have you been? And in “
A Good Man is hard to find, “ the grandmother is manipulative and self-serving who lives in the
past . Both connie and the grandmother both don’t live in reality . Connie sees her life as a show
, while the grandmother lives in the past. Both grandmother and connie see themselves as
important, both are concerned with their appearance. Another similar trait is when they both
meet men where about to kill them .
- Description - Connie’s inner characterization presents her as a self-absorbed girl, whose mind is
mostly on music and boys , there was a time when she was day dreaming about the boy she meet
at the restaurant , and who likes to think of herself as pretty. She was fifteen and she had a
quick, nervous giggling habit of craning her neck to glance into mirrors or checking other
people's faces to make sure her own was all right.
- Connie is still very much a child: when faced with imminent harm, she cries out for her mother.
Her fragile identity, already split into two personas, completely fractures when Arnold Friend
threatens her.
- At the end of the story becomes clear how much Connie actually loves her family. She
sacrifices herself so that they won't get hurt.

- Description - This woman will do whatever it takes to get what she wants and she doesn't
let anyone else's feelings stand in her way. She tries to justify her demands by convincing
