Executive Summary

Human resource management is an essential component of any company or organization. It plays a vital role in the management of securing, developing, deploying, and assessing human resources. Without employees, companies and organizations would be unable to operate effectively and would cease to exist if there were no individuals to carry out necessary activities for proper functioning. This paper will study and critically analyze the human resource management system of a luxury hotel chain located in the city of Las Vegas, Nevada. Through this evaluation project, the project team will be able to identify the problems the hotel chain is currently experiencing and will provide recommendations for areas that need improvement.

Introduction

The city of Las Vegas is known to be the entertainment capital of the world. It is popular for its wide variety of shopping malls, fine dining, entertainment, and resort/hotel properties. For this project, our team wanted to focus on one of Las Vegas’ many successful hotels and to study how their human resource management system operates. Luckily, one of our team members, Phuong Nguyen, had connections to the human resources department at JW Marriott Las Vegas Resort and Spa.

Human resource management is an essential part of doing business. Department of Human resource management has set of tasks to secure, develop, deploy and assess human resources based on forecasts of future human resource demand for approaching organization's goal. Las Vegas has lots of hotel companies by regional feature. JW Marriott Las Vegas is a hotel chain of Marriott International which is the largest chain in the world. It has more than 6,500 properties in 127 countries and territories around the world. Whether it is doing an assignment or getting a job, I’m sure most people are interested in a major company. Most of our team members were willing to get an interview in a major company as well. Fortunately, one of our team member Phuong Nguyen who works for JW Marriott Las Vegas was able to get an interview with her human resource department directors. But, the process of getting an interview was not as smooth as we thought. Phuong Nguyen had to e-mail human resource department several times and wait for couple weeks to get a reply. Soon after we received the reply, three of our team members who had a time could go for an interview. During the interview, we were able to learn about their understanding and value of human resources management by listening to their thoughts, perspectives, values, and so on

The Role of Human Resource Management and Its Importance

As we previously learned in MGT 367 class, the Human Resource Management mainly deals with employee welfare based on employee amicable interactions within the organization. As such, the Marriott HR department was playing with the same role as what we learned. The Marriott HR department particularly consisted of four positions which are HR representatives, HR specialist, HR supervisors and training manager. We could learn the importance of each position through the interview we had.

HR representative is the position which mainly help people to interact each other both in person and on the phone, email or etc. it provides services related to benefits, employee relation issues, or how things work at the resort. It is not the position which directly solve the issues but it helps people to get solution faster and effectively.

HR specialist is primarily in charge of recruitment and hiring and this position is one of the most difficult roles. It usually takes over a month to go from beginning job posting to hiring people and also, HR specialist has to check whether applicants meet the requisition of the opened position and then hire people. Hiring the high potential candidate who can do better than other is the important to reduce turnover and increase retention.

HR supervisors are focusing on benefits and employees’ interrelation. There are two HR supervisors. One of them is responsible of benefits with enrollment, problems with the benefit plan providers, and interacts with the carriers to get questions answered and problem resolved. And the other supervisor focuses on employee relations. Supervisor provides the better ways to go for people who have problems. These efforts of supervisors provide a better working environment by identifying problems and complaints among employees.
