During many celebrations presents are given as a token of appreciation as well as a representation of themselves to the individual. The thought and effort that is gone into a present is priceless. Presents help bring back the important events in life and help store specific memories. Holden Caulfield the character in the novel The Catcher in the Rye went through several positions in his life where certain things stood out more than other. Holden Caulfield is a character with great emotion and personality; it is always difficult to figure our what he’s really looking for at times. During the journey of reading this novel the reader begins to know Holden in a better perspective. His views on life as well other obstacles say a lot about him. The Character Holden Caulfield has entertained the reader and has given the reader great satisfaction throughout the novel The Catcher in the Rye, as his birthday comes near it is time for the reader to present Holden a token of appreciation.

The perfect gift to give Holden would be a checkerboard set. This game set stood out the most from a wide variety of things. Throughout the novel, the comparison between a board game and life is very significant. The board game represents Holden’s life, and how he plays it and the steps he takes in it especially with Jane. Whenever the thought of playing checkers came up it always brought up the great memory of Jane Gallagher. Holden and Jane always played checkers together on the front porch. The game showed him many different things about Jane. The game showed how timid and reserved Jane was, and how she was frightened to make the next move in life. The game also created a strong bond between the two. The game also played a part in them almost necking. The checkers board would bring back several memories of Jane for Holden that he could treasure for years and years.
