Abortion

Abortion; a women’s way of killing her unborn child, or is it a women’s way for saving herself for a life she wasn’t ready for? Which is it? In truth, there is no definition to directly define abortion due to the constant battle about the topic. Though, why is this topic so controversial? It could be because some people would call abortion murder while others may not. Personally, abortion is a word with little meaning. The reason is due to the fact that abortion is a choice woman makes, regardless of whether or not someone disagrees or agrees with it. It should be the woman’s choice and hers alone to decide. This then leads to the question to why people would want to make abortion illegal when it is able to help so many out. There is a large sum of women that who becomes pregnant unintentionally due to accidents such as when a birth control pill is not working, or if a condom breaks during intercourse. Some were even forced to have sex and become pregnant unwillingly due to events such as rape. Should these people have to suffer a fate they never intended? Frankly, abortion should be legalized, giving women that option when there is absolutely no choice left, or else if it becomes illegal, some women might go to the extreme, which could prove to be fatal.

Regardless of whether abortion is illegal, many women will find ways to have an abortion even if it could endanger their health, or worst, it could even cost them their life. Statistics state that “in the two decades before abortion was legal in the U.S., it's been estimated that nearly a million women per year sought out illegal abortions. Thousands died. Tens of thousands were mutilated. All were forced to behave as if they were criminals” (www.plannedparenthood.org). There are also claims concerning women’s health with unsafe abortions made by doctors, “For tens of thousands of women with heart disease, kidney disease, sickle-cell anemia and severe diabetes, and other illnesses that can be life-threatening, the availability of legal abortion has helped avert serious medical complications that could have resulted from childbirth” (www.plannedparenthood.org). Logically, by forcing abortion to be illegal, many lives are at stake. We are now pushing women to go to the extreme when in theory women really do not have to do such a thing. Legalizing abortion not only means helping to keep a majority of women healthy, but also permitting many to have this procedure with appropriate doctors that could insure their safety and health.

Many reasons are used to justify why a woman may want to abort her child such as one may not be ready or if it was accidental, and worst of all, because of rape. However, some believe these justifications justify nothing when it comes to a child growing inside of a soon-to-be-mother. (www.religioustolerance.org). One of my closest friends even agreed to this claim exclaiming, “Women just have to suffer the consequences of what they did. You can’t just go killing a baby when it is now the mother’s responsibility to take care of it. Think about the baby! It is selfish for a woman to ever do such a thing no matter how young she is!” (Ung). Others, on the other hand, believe that sometimes it is out of a woman’s hand when she happens to be pregnant. “I believe that if a woman messes around with guys, then she shouldn’t punish her child for the things she did, though, if it has to deal with rape and being so young, then I think abortion may be the best thing” (Chau). Under those circumstances like rape or being too young, the woman or girl should receive rights to being able to decide if she’s ready to do something that could change the rest of her life. A woman can not be blamed for accidents such as a condom breaking or a birth control pill not working, it is just beyond one’s control. Although, it isn’t as if all women would choose to abort, it’s just that there are those who need that alternative in order to keep their life straight and in order.

However, it is understandable why one may think abortion is wrong while the other may think it is right. Many believe that abortion is the equivalent of murdering someone. Although, before people can say abortion is wrong, we must first analyze what is the definition of a human person, and after that has been answered, so is the topic of abortion. Nevertheless, this is a task that doctors seem to have trouble answering. We all have our own voice and opinions, but these opinions seem to clash whenever the topic of abortion occurs. When interviewing
