“The greatest destroyer of peace is abortion because if a mother can kill her own child, what is left for me to kill you and you to kill me? There is nothing between,” proclaimed Mother Theresa (Mother). While many people who believe in abortion come up with an abundance of excuses for what makes it morally acceptable, there is no way to sugar coat murder. Allowing for abortions gives irresponsible teens an easy way out, undeserving young mothers a license to kill, and destruction to lives of potential presidents, Nobel Peace Prize winners, and philanthropists. There is a reason no one person was given ultimate power in politics and no “evil villain” has taken over the world. Playing God is too daunting of a task for any human to handle. Based off of the corruption of morality in court cases concerning abortion, proven through the scientific proof of life, the minute a baby is conceived along with the psychological effects to women, abortion should be illegal.

In a 1973 abortion case, Roe versus Wade, a pregnant woman from Texas brought forth a complaint to the state laws requiring a medical excuse to allow for an abortion (McBride). The court ruled that an abortion should be legal by the privacy clause in the Bill of Rights until the baby was “viable,” able to live outside of the mother’s womb. Several Supreme Court Justices, including Byron R. White and William H. Rehnquist, boldly disagreed with the ruling by declaring, “I find nothing in the language or history of the Constitution to support the Court’s judgment… the Court values the convenience of the pregnant mother more than the continued existence and development of the life or potential life that she carries” (White). Disagreement over this ruling mainly revolves around the debate of when life begins, which according to pro-life and biology is at the creation of a zygote.

Sitting in the dark room gazing at the monitor, I followed the baby’s movements on the ultrasound. Tossing and turning in the mom’s belly, the baby continued to make it difficult to even observe. Working alongside an OB/GYN for the day, I saw many different kinds of people come and go and learned lots about pregnancy and the development of babies. I saw several different ultra sounds and listened to several babies’ heartbeats, each distinct but all very rapid and full of life. When scientists search for life on other planets, they use five criteria to distinguish life and non-life: living things are highly organized, have the ability to acquire energy, respond to surroundings, can reproduce, and adapt. According these scientific guidelines, a zygote’s life begins the minute the sperm and the egg unite. Even though some argue that the mother will “house” this fetus, it isn’t a part of the mother’s body because it automatically has a brain and kidneys (When). With the research and technological advances that have been done on chromosome disorders, pre-born babies are able to be operated on at a mere twenty weeks. People who claim abortion is anything but murder need to refer back to biology.
