1960 - AMERICAN FOOTBALL LEAGUE

o Lamar Hunt was the one who got "American Football League up and running"

* 1964 - CBS - $36 million

o He got people right out of college, big names. Joe Namath, Lance Alworth, Fred Biletnikoff, Mike Garrett.

o His contract: was a total of $427000

1966 - Merger

1967 - Super Bowl 1

1974 - World Football League

Gary Davidson - IMPORTANT - He set up the World Football League. He got big names player to bring exposure. He signed Larry Csonka, Paul Warfield, Jim Kilck

1975 - World Football League - Folded

o No exposure on TV, Games were at same time as NFL and people preferred to watch that instead.

* 1983 - United States Football League

o Chet Simmons was the founder. They decided not to compete with NFL.

o They played in Spring and summer, different months from NFL.

o They had some financial staying power from some big owners

o ABC and ESPN supported them

o They operated in large cities and stadiums

o They had the draft before NFL and they got some of the best talents out of college. Players: Kelvin Bryant, Anthony Carter, Trumaine Johnoson, Heschel Walker

1984 - Mike Rozier, Steve Young

1985 - Doug Flutie joined the league

1986 - Things went really bad and the league had to fold.

1989 - Paul Tagliabue

XFL - Vince McMahon was the owner - WWF

o He convinced NBC to join them

o Pool of 1500 Players - Draft 500

o QB Salary - $50 000

o Position Players Salary - $45000

o Kickers Salary - $35000
