Research Essay Outline
Being a sports fan these days requires high tolerance for awful behavior, not to mention criminal activity.(1) Most sports require one to be mentally and physically tough in order to be successful at what he/she is doing. However sometimes players cross the line and brake the rules, putting themselves in harm's way. For example, throughout the last decade or so players have been associated with many negative activities, such as fighting during games and getting suspended or fined. These kinds of behavior in previous years have been overlooked and dealt with only a slap on the wrist by the commissioners. However things have began to be taken seriously in today's sports world, and athletes are beginning to pay for their actions which are found in appropriate by the leagues.
I. Give background information on unacceptable behavior by athletes in the past. Examples include; 1987-1989; 90'-91 season of the Detroit Pistons and fines they receive. 1997 New York Knicks vs. Miami Heat playoff melee. 2004 brawl between Indianapolis Pacers and Detroit Pistons, in which players got into fights with the fans.
II. Give information on how these incidents have been recorded and what have been the consequences for the players (The Detroit Pistons alone coughed up a total of $112,250 between 1987-88 and '90-91 during the four-year run of the two-time champion Bad Boys)
III. Have these kinds of fines and suspensions worked, has there been a decrease in this kind of behavior. And if not yes, why the recent outbreak of huge fines and long suspensions.
IV. Since the NBA has become a word marketed sport, does the NBA want to keep its image clean so that more fans could be drawn.
