Biography Essay: Adrian Sutherland

Adrian Sutherland was born on November 29, 1976 in Moose Factory, Ontario. Adrian is a role model because he is caring, a traditional knowledge keeper, and hardworking.

When Adrian was a child, he grew up and lived in Attawapiskat, Ontario. When he was about 5 years, old he lived with his mother in a small house. He taught himself how to hunt by watching others when he would go hunting with relatives. Growing up, at the time, his family did not have any running water. They would drink water and bath in rivers, and in the winter time, they would melt ice or snow. When Adrian was around the age of 10, his mother passed away. Marius Sutherland, his uncle and Lucy Sutherland, his aunt, adopted him and lived with them until he was ready to begin his own life with his wife and four children.

Adrian cares very much about First Nation issues and the youth of Attawapiskat.He focuses on economic development for Attawapiskat. Adrian is very against drug and substance abuse. Many youth in Attawapiskat are addicted to drugs and alcohol. In March 2016, there was a suicide crisis. That is when Adrian realized that they needed his help. He shows that he cares by running Drug and Alcohol Awareness workshops, Suicide prevention workshops and running programs such as hockey games, public skating and teaching youth how to hunt, snare and how to do a sagabon. Adrian has showed many ways that he cares about First Nation Issues and the youth of Attawapiskat.

Adrian is a traditional knowledge keeper. He takes his family out into the bush every Spring and Fall, to hunt and snare. Every now and then, he brings a group of youth out into the bush, to teach them how to hunt, snare, and how to properly cook wild meat and bannock over a fire in a wigwam. Adrian aldo runs ceremonies and dances and sings in pow wows. He has taught himself how to dance and sing, and has been going to powwows ever since. Adrian has many ways to show that he is a traditional knowledge keeper.

Adrian is also a very hardworking man. He is a singer/songwriter, a businessman, and a hockey player. Adrian
