African communication and styles exist in various forms of languages and art. These different forms of expression range from old hymns and rituals to modern day hip hop or R&B (Rhythm and blues). Many forms of communication started due to secrecy. African Americans were not allowed to speak or express themselves, without consequences. This birthed the first forms of communication which was spoken through old spirituals and hymns.
African American communication cannot be discussed without African American culture. African American culture also known as black culture has century’s worth of deep roots in historical experiences i.e. the middle passage. Which was a triangular trade in which millions of Africans were shipped to the New World as part of the Atlantic slave trade. African American culture can be traced back to west and central Africa. Africans were kidnapped and traded for European Goods. This put them into bondage and slavery. Slavery greatly restricted the ability of African-Americans to practice their original cultural and traditions but many practices, values and beliefs survived and were instilled. Communication was used through ceremonies, rituals and Hymns, or as my generation calls them old Negro spirituals.
