CHAPTER I: LITERATURE REVIEW
- Background[1]
It is a fact that every developing country in the world has to deal with pollution due to their rapid industrialization, economic expansion and Vietnam is no exception. Before the “Doi Moi” plan, Hanoi, the centre of culture, economic and politics of Vietnam, was a small and peaceful city but had already been a popular destination for domestic tourisst.
After the innovation of the country, Hanoi’s population, growth rate and urbanization speed and tourism rise significantly. However, due to poor planning and regulations, Hanoi’s environment deteriorates quickly and pollution become a huge problem. The fact that this matter is unceasingly worsening does not only affect the local population, but also has a significant impact on the development of the city as well, especially tourism.

Especially for a developing country like Vietnam, pollution has resulted directly from industrialization and rapid urbanization. Therefore, we need to raise more awareness about this issue, and also take immediate actions before our entire ecosystems are destroyed by the catastrophic amount of pollution. Hanoi, the iconic capital of Vietnam, is facing real threats caused by pollution. The city is standing among choices of conflicting goals, namely achieving sustained economic growth and protecting the environment. In particular, Hanoi’s tourism industry faces multiple issues caused by pollution, such as food hygiene and safety, terrible air quality, and untreated sewage. This urgent situation drives our group to conduct this research paper since it does not only detrimental influence every individual’s living but also has destructive effects on the tourism of Hanoi.

3.2. Secondly, the research illustrates the role of tourism to the development of economy and society in Hanoi, as well the real situation of air pollution here. Therefore, the research links the negative effects of air pollution to tourism in our capital.
3.3. Thirdly, the research helps to raise awareness of protecting local environment among citizens, especially university students in Hanoi.
3.4. Finally, the research shares some solutions to the problem aiming to attract many tourists to Hanoi.
- Scope
The research only focuses on behavior and satisfication of tourists with local environment; negative effects of air pollution on the number of tourists, and the range of the research is the central districts of Hanoi.
- Research methods
The questionnaire will be used to collect the tourists’ opinions on the real situation in Ha Noi. The questions will be both open- and close-ended. To ensure proper wording of the survey questions, we will have the questions back translated (Denis Vincent - teacher). We will pretest the survey on a pilot sample to eliminate any problems with the wording and questions (Denis Vincent - teacher). All respondents will be foreign tourists. Respondents will be randomly selected among tourists in the area of Hoan Kiem lake and Old Quarter. The total number of respondents for the survey will be around 100.
