Algebra comes from the title of a book written by al-Khworizimi. Algebra is the science of restoration and reduction. In algebra, letters are used to represent numbers in polynomials and inequalities. Inequalities are now viewed as important as equations by Swokowski and Cole. In these first two chapters we learnt several methods for solving basic equations and inequalities.
The main topic of chapter one was the fundamentals and concepts of algebra. This type of algebra is found in science and industry formulas. This type of algebra is found in chemistry when scientific notation is used. The main topic of chapter two is equations and inequalities. This part of algebra can be used to determine distance, rate, time, relationships between temperature scales, test average, investments, prices, etc.
For me the most difficult aspect of this study was solving for variables and imaginary numbers. Solving for variables is challenging for me when it becomes very complex because I end up breaking lots of rules in math to get an incorrect answer. I did not have problems with imaginary numbers on the homework, but on the test I missed about half of them. This is because they are so easy and if I am rushing through them I tend to make stupid mistakes.
I can improve my learning on these topics and future ones to come by getting a tutor. Holden Easley has been extremely helpful in explaining concepts to me that I did not fully understand in class. On the chapter one retake he helped me improve my score by thirty points. I knew what I was doing and the reason I got a seventy was because I didn't have enough time. If I had more time, I am confident I would have been able to get at least a B. I am going to try to work with Holden one day a week after school and get help so I can learn these concepts with a deeper understanding. I want to get to the point where the night before the test I don't have to study.
