In Robert FrostЎЇs poem ÐŽoOut, OutЎЄЎ±, he depicts a tragedy of a poor kid and lampoons the realistic society of poverty and cold-blooded people. He reveals the theme of irony, and makes the theme clear through description and personification.

The poet describes the setting of this poem by writing ÐŽo Five mountain ranges one behind the other / Under the sunset far into VermontÐŽ± (5-6), which sounds like a beautiful place. However, even the surroundings are magnificent, the little boy could do noting but working hard cutting down trees, say nothing of playing with his friends or enjoying his childhood. The boy is ÐŽodoing a manЎЇs work, though a child at heartÐŽ±(24), Frost suggests the huge contrast within the boy. His family must be very poor and his parents cannot help but send him to work here. He is so tired that even a half hour break would please him. When his sister tells him ÐŽosuperÐŽ±(14), he is so happy that the saw ÐŽoleaped outÐŽ± at his hand, cutting off his arm that ultimately leads his death. His first outcry is not of pain but a ÐŽorueful laughÐŽ±(19). This indicates he is mature enough to know what his fate will be if he lost his hand and his working ability. Because of his familyЎЇs poverty, he understands the cruelty of the real world better than other children of his same age. Maybe his death is the best ending for him. His life has been ruined when he is still young, as if his birth is for death. The last line of this poem ÐŽoAnd they, since they were not the one dead, turned to their affairsÐŽ±(33-34) portrays the imagery of a group of cold-blooded people and the dark side of the realistic worldЎЄa world without love.

Personification is also an important poetic device in this poem. The poet limns the saw as something that ÐŽosnarled and rattledÐŽ±(1) to personifies the saw and suggests a tone of dislike for the saw and the job. The little boy suffers
