Thorough Analysis of “My Last Duchess”

In the poem “MY Last Duchess” by Robert Browning, Robert talks about the death of the love of his life, Elizabeth. Although she is not mentioned in the poem, it is quite clear whom he is talking about. In the poem he talks about how he almost believes she is alive because the painting makes it seem like she is in fact alive. Finally Robert talks about her in such detail that describes her personality, giving one the idea what Elizabeth is actually like as a person. In the poem “My Last Duchess” Robert Browning describes what his wife, Elizabeth is like as if she was still alive.

Robert refers to Elizabeth in the painting that there is of her on the wall. He explains how life-like that painting of her was on the wall. “That’s my last Duchess painted on the wall, Looking as if she were alive” (Browning). Robert explains that the painting looks almost exactly like Elizabeth that he could easily mistake the painting for the real her, which is why he called the picture a wonder.

Robert explains Elizabeth’s personality in the poem, so one can get an idea of what she acted like as well as looked like. “Too easily impressed; she liked whate’er She looked on, and her looks went everywhere” (Browning). Robert explains a huge part of Elizabeth’s personality, which is quite simple. She was almost always impressed with anything that Robert could come up with. She must have especially liked his capacity to love her because she knew that he knew her health was failing, on top of that there was a huge age gap between them.

The poem “My Last Duchess” by Robert Browning was written for the love of his life, Elizabeth. He explains the painting on the wall looks just like her and a piece of her personality that he greatly enjoyed about here. Robert Browning described her as if she was still alive when they were talking in the poem.
