Critical Thinking Case Study вЂ" Part One
ANALYSIS:
1. Assumptions:
п‚* Kelly
o Feels the initial application for the new product requires all requested features to be implemented within the first release of the new software.
o Does not have the staff or time to create all features requests for the new project.
o Could not possible launch the new product with an August launch date and have a successful product.
o Kelly feels Pat is going behind his back regarding the production of the new product.
o
п‚* Pat
o Believes a strong potential exists in the retail market industry for iScanner technology and equipment.
o Consumers would be comfortable about a Retail Industry following their every move, logging personal information for personal tastes with Retinal scanning.
o Pat believes the company has an option to sell consumer buying trend information for profit.
o Pat thinks because of flexibility and power of the present software and operating system the capital investment will be minimal.
o Pat believes the company can create a new product with existing staff costs. With and additional costs of $250,000 for advertising costs.
o Assumes Kelly Thomas, can produce additional features on the existing software system by the August launch date.
o Minimal staff time and effort will be required to development and bring the product to market.
o Hardware components require little need to redesign.
o Pat feels Product Development is dragging their feet about the first release and thinks product development can create a staged release of its product to get a foothold into the market.
o Since the iScanner software had done well with its first release, Pat assumes the additional budget is justified thinking the new features will bring in ROI within the next ten years.
o Pat is assuming Kelly does not want to move ahead for the company to product a new product.
o Has not consulted with Kelly Thomas, to compare notes as to the flexibility of the software and the time constraints for developing the new project
o
п‚* Cliff
o Assumes to recapture the market with the hiring of Pat Lambert as Director of Marketing.
o Confident to launch a new product to market by years end.
o Reduce the budget by 15% in the next quarter.
п‚* Chris
o Feels the test product can be ready for beta testing by August if the company is aggressive.
o Development processes seems to be stalling.
o Budget costs can be reduced by fifteen percent without layoffs.
o Has not consulted Kelly Thomas on new project for creation of relational databases to existing software.
2. Arguments:
п‚* Cliff O’Connor
o The requested budget of $925 is problematic вЂ" and not foreseeable. The company needs to stay within the limited budget of $400K. Requesting the August launch date.
п‚* Pat Lambert
o States a confidential source has informed her of a competitor, Secur-A-Corp is in the process of developing “some kind of retail application” stating it is only a matter of months before the competitor, Secur-A-Corp will come to market with a competitive product and AcuScan needs to bring the new product to fruition by August to get a jump start in the market.
o Pat’s has talked to a programmer about the new product and time constraints and the programmers stated time would not be an issue to build a new product.
o Pats request a meeting with Cliff to go over her new plan to bring Operation Optimize to life. She would like to go over the alternatives to hire additional programming contractors to augment existing staff and to speed up the redevelopment of the software, because she is not getting much corporation from Kelly Thomas.
o Pat sends a memo to Maureen the Organizational Development
п‚* Kelly Thomas
o Kelly does not feel his limited staff can maintain existing service with present customers, let along produce a new product.
o Kelly feels he is already short staffed and is not confident about producing a valued product by years end without putting the software through Quality Control testing which is time consuming.
o Kelly’s argument is the company can not produce all features requested for the new product by August and be successful.
п‚* Chris Martinas
o Chris feels the new product is the future of the company and wants Kelly and Pat to face the challenge presented and work on the project development for a new product.
o Chris has written a memo stating sales and service revenues are sinking he wants a 15 % reduction in all departments. He feels the company can work through this without any employee layoffs.
3. Evaluation of each argument as sound or unsound and why. Indicate whether they are emotional or logical in nature.
п‚* Cliff O’Connor
o The company has not created a new product since the inception of the company. With sales and services plummeting, a $575,000 projected budget for the creation of the new project is not foreseeable. I would agree with this assessment as a sound evaluation of the companies’ financial status. I do not think it would be beneficial for Cliff to request an additional 15% in budget cuts and expect to launch a new product by years end. The ramifications of the request would cause an emotional upset.
