Ancient Rome

Architecture; Influence on Western Society

Many ancient civilizations have taken ideas from neighboring societies and crafted ideas of their own. Ancient Rome is a prime example of a civilization that took good ideas and turned them into greater ones. From their decadent buildings to their complex irrigation systems, the Romans constructed elaborate bridges, roads, aqueducts as well as buildings and theaters. The Romans did not do it all on their own though. Much of their inspiration came from the Greeks architect and sciences. The Greeks used Doric, Ionic and Corinthian styles of architecture. Romans also used these types but perfected them. Each style was made the Romans own, they secured these architectural styles and created a revolutions for future generations to mirror.

The Romans contributed to the original construction of bridges, roads, aqueducts and large houses for the rich. The bridges connected many places to one another and allowed the aqueducts to carry water from the hills to the cities where the water was needed. The roads were well built and stone covered. These roads went to all ends of the Roman Empire. This made it very easy for Romans to conquer many territories. These roads were built on precise foundations and allowed for trade and commerce to flourish. Thus making Rome such a powerful civilization. The rich had immense houses that were detailed from the inside out. Beautiful sculpture-like fixtures held the buildings up all over Rome. The columns could be the most detailed and exquisite anyone had ever seen. Many architects put so much character into one building that it could be considered art. The romans also designed bath houses, pools, cold and hot room, and fountains. These houses had terra-cotta piping to create hot rooms in certain places. There was also under floor heating, new technologies that the Romans introduced.

Most civilizations still to this day use Roman style architecture.
