I will begin by exploring the chapter on Virtual Gender and Nerd Masculinity. In this chapter, the author explores the ramifications of gender as depicted in video games and the social context as perceived by gamers and the youth.
The quote that I chose is "To Claim that video games are the source of real-life degradation of women is a simplistic attempt by moral entrepreneurs to create a moral panic or engage in simplistic politics; video games make an easy scapegoat for larger social problems, including sexism and violence against women."
This quote found on page 39 is used by the author to express the fact that video games are not the source of violence against women, as well as sexism. This quote gives an adequate analysis of the situation that most people ignore. Indeed, it true that video games cannot be blamed for sexism, since they depict what the society thinks. Video games are made to please, and to do so, they must be able to give life to peoples desires. Violence against women is a vice within humanity and not within video games.
The second quote that I identified is "the Female nerds face a more difficult situation; being stereotyped as unattractive has more negative consequences for women than men."
This quote is found on page 39 too and is used by the author to depict the perception and stereotyping of men against women in the world of gaming and computer prowess. Being a computer geek, which signifies one being a nerd, is a “cool” thing as a man. Nerds are openly deviant in all ways possible and are considered superior by the society. This is different for women who instead of being viewed as sharp and resourceful, in the end treated with contempt and disgust.
In the end, I would like to pose a question to students. Is it in order to believe that women who shine in the male dominated word such as technology as less feminine?
