A. OP 1

Between 1607 and 1763, the British North American colonies developed experience in, and the expectation of self government in the political, religious, economic and social aspects of life.

THESIS:

Between the years of 1607and 1763, the British North American colonies developed experience and the expectation of self government in the political such as the Mayflower Compact, religious dealing with the Puritans, economic with the establishment of tobacco, and social such as Indians, aspects of life.

SUPPORT:

Self government:

House of Burgess- this was the colonist's first step towards self-government, 1619. 1619 was also the year that slave trade was first introduced; this was very controversial and hypocritical.

Political:

The House of Burgess was this first form/step towards self governments for the colonists. The Mayflower Compact was also introduced during this time period. This Compact stated that the majority of the people ruled, majority rules.

Religious:

These colonies were extremely religious= Puritans. Separatists wanted to completely leave/separate from these Catholic Church. Puritans on the other hand just wanted to reform the Catholic Church.

Economic:

The colony Jamestown was founded by a joint stock company. In Jamestown the first cash crop was introduced. John Rolfe cultivated the tobacco plant, which inevitably saved the colony and gave the England joint stock company lots of money. John Smith also saved the colony with his famous word, "He that does not work, shall not eat". '

Social:

Slaves were becoming a major issue with the new colonies mainly because if the newly introduced slave trade throughout the colonies. Women were increasingly becoming an issue. Also colonists didn't care about the Indians throughout the nation and continued to move west.

1. Analyze the differences between the Spanish settlements in the Southwest and the English colonies in New England in the seventeenth century in terms of two of the following:

THESIS:

In the seventeenth century many differences arose between the Spanish settlements and the English colonies involving religion with the Spanish practicing Catholic religion, and differences in politics as the Spanish settlements were all monarchies.

Over bearing and religion controlled almost every aspect in their lives

Left England because of religious persecution but they themselves ended up persecuting others in their own society, such as Anne Hutchinson.

Slavery existed and played a big role in society

La Comida system, "food for everyone"

They had very good relations with the Indians

English politics:

Still somewhat of monarchy, yet they were making steps towards a form of self government

Larger sense of civic duty

2. Compare and contrast the ways in which economic development affected politics in Massachusetts and Virginia in the period from 1607 to 1750.

THESIS:

Economies developments throughout the years of 1607 and 1750 greatly differed between the two colonies of Massachusetts and Virginia. These economic developments such as mercantilism, led to further affected politics.

ANALYSIS:

During these years these two colonies thrived and they both had to do this in different ways. After they made economic developments the Massachusetts colony formed the Mayflower Compact. The Mayflower Compact stated the majority of the people ruled. The people were white, property owning, males.

In the Virginia colony, Jamestown after making some economic developments mainly with the cultivation of the first cash crop tobacco, they established the first step towards self government, the House of Burgess.

3. "Geography was a primary factor in the shaping the development of the British colonies in North America"

Assess the validity of this statement for the 1600's.

THESIS:

During the 1600's many colonies in North America was beginning to form. Geography such as where ports where and assessable to westward lands helped in the shaping of these British colonies.
