Architectural Short Write: Statue of Liberty

The Statue of Liberty National Monument was given to the people of the United States by France in 1886. The Statue of Liberty was first given to us to show a sign of friendship between the French and the U.S, and over the years has grown to represent freedom and democracy as well as international friendship. The Statue of Liberty is a woman holding a torch, and a tablet that states the date of American Independence. The Statue of Liberty greeted all newcomers to the United States, with welcoming arms. The Statue was the first symbol and piece of architecture seen by those arriving from foreign lands to the east. When this statue was being constructed, workers first started off by building a “skeleton”. They then later added a sheet of copper as the “skin” of the lady.

Located in the left hand of the statue is a tablet “July IV MDCCLXXVI”, which translated into English means July 4, 1776 our date of independence. This is the foundation for any American Dream. If American’s did not have this freedom, then we would never be able to have any sort of American Dream. What’s also unique about the Statue of Liberty is that the crown on the statue’s head has seven rays, which represent the seven seas and continents of the world. This shows America’s openness to foreigners seeking their American Dream. The Statue of Liberty today is actually shown as a symbol of the American Dream. The statue is on our money also seen and accepted in everyday life. On October 28th 1886, the statue’s 50th anniversary, president Cleveland made the statement "We will not forget that Liberty has here made her home; nor shall her chosen altar be neglected."
