Are Standards Helpful?

In general, I believe it is essential to set standards for, not only, IT departments but the overall company as well. Typically, standards are established by someone in authority as a rule of measure for quantity, value or quality. Specifically, in relation to the technical industry standards are necessary to establish MIS harmony, so to speak. In the article "Are Standards Helpful?" George had to step up and take the leadership role to establish a standard for the company. Initially, on a short-term basis this adjustment created disgust and frustration, but when considering the long-term benefits it was the best decision to make. Transitioning from the varying types of software programs, brands and versions to complete common goals will only enhance the opportunity for effective communication and interfacing between the departments.
It is very important to know your computer needs and requirements ranging from operating system to processor to RAM and specific uses; this will enhance your level of efficiency and optimal functionality. Thus, making tasks easier to complete opposed to attempting to use a system that isn't designed to meet typical goals. While George made an excellent decision, I believe software packages should be customized to meet the specific needs of each department. Surely, graphic designers would not be most effective in their duties by using word processing software. And administrative assistants would equally unprepared by using graphic design software to compose a letter. Thus, there should be standards within each department to ensure success within each department.
RAM, storage and speed are related in that they shake hands to offer optimal performance.
