ART EXPLORATION PROPOSAL
Through my experimental design process, I aim to explore insecurities and how they affect people. I plan to explore what goes on in the minds of individuals who experience insecurities and portray their thoughts and perceptions of themselves. These thoughts being false and warped caused by their internal uncertainty and anxiety of their image creating a precarious and unassured identity. I want to, in addition, explore how these internal perceptions have the power to influence the projection of oneself's identity and therefore construct a false projection of oneself upon others affecting their appearance and personality negatively. I then want to further explore how insecurities can be concealed behind beauty and perfection to instill an idea that insecurities reside in us all no matter appearance or perfection. Through multiple artworks, I plan to communicate a spectrum of insecurities to conclude an understanding that everyone is on this spectrum whether they conceal it, hiding it by the beauty of appearance or strong personalities, or are unable to contain these insecurities and let them dictate their life. Through this spectrum, I want to show the importance of finding a balance between hiding behind one's insecurities and letting them inhibit oneself.
What inspired me to undertake this theme was the 'superiority complex' a theory credited to Alfred Adler of whom was an Austrian medical doctor who specialised in the area of psychotherapy. The 'superiority complex' involves the relationship between superiority and inferiority and the harm they can cause to oneself and others. This being that to feel superior one must conceal their inferiority by making others feel small and inferior to oneself, and when inferior ones individual performance becomes stunted and personality disorders and low self-esteem persist (Sunder, 2019). These ideas have significantly influenced and inspired my theme along with my passion for an understanding of psychology and how the mind works.
Throughout my design process, I will explore pen and other drawing mediums. I will be drawing faces and experiment on how they can be manipulated to show how someone's insecurities can inform their identity. I want to portray the subjects insecurities through distortion or compartmentalisation, and the subjects true natural beauty through smooth tones; two sides, how the insecurities make the subject view themselves and also how the viewer of the subject actually perceives the subject which in this case is positive. , however, want to furthermore explore full blown insecurities on how it affects the subject to an extreme where it influences the viewers perception of the subject negatively and sense and portray extreme certainty that effects the persons identity externally and how they are perceived by others. I will experiment to portray this through distortion, harsher linework or darker tones and outlines to show the evil side of one's insecurities that has manifested within the mind and spread to destroy appearance and identity. In addition, I want to explore insecurities that do not appear to affect the subjects identity nor image through smooth blended tone and symmetry to create this perfect image whilst experimenting with how eyes can help to portray a slight sense of insecurities in a subtle way. I want the over beautification and perfection of the face and the eyes to create an off-putting and false edge to the artwork whilst bringing a sense of eeriness and stillness to the work, whilst most importantly looking the most 'normal' of the artworks. I will explore these three ideas with a triptych as a final formation in mind.

I like this work as it communicates beauty and perfection, however additionally being slightly creepy due to its irregular whited out eyes and smoothness of tones in the face. In addition to the eyes being whitened out, I like how the mouth is sewn shut these aspects create a barrier between the characters soul and the outside world communicating a sense of trapedness. This artwork strongly correlates to the idea of being perfect and beautiful however hiding behind and trapping one's insecurities within oneself.

I like how this artwork uses circles to compartmentalise the face to communicate inner confusion and uncertainty of oneself ,however, still maintains relatively beautiful and realistic features of a face to show that externally a sense of identity exists. Through these concepts of the artwork I can show the inner insecurities compartmentalisation and through the realistic elements of the face show the positive external identity of the subject to show that the balance of insecurities how they can be managed to not affect one's identity negatively.
